Digital meters for accurate testing for water filters

If you have a water filter that does not use any type of chemicals to regenerate or “re-charge” itself, such as our Terminox® Iron Filter. Then you definitely want to keep an eye on the pH of your well water. We’ll use the Terminox® Iron Filter as an example. With this iron filter, you want to have your pH at least 7.5 or higher for optimal performance. When you test your well water with test strips, you will usually not get a completely accurate result. As these strips are mainly intended for pools and spas, where accuracy isn’t as crucial. And where the water is already treated.

Never use test “Strips”

A step up from the water test strips would be the water test drops. Because liquid drop style pH test kits are pretty accurate for well water testing. But the use of color matching is where the flaw of this test kit lies. We all see colors differently. And human error can lead to inaccurate results of your well water test. And when you’re working with well water filtration systems you need to have an accurate pH reading. But test kits that use drops are far more accurate than test strips. And if it is the red liquid. Which is actually called phenol red. Then it is ok to double the drops added from 5 to 10. It won’t change the hue of the color. But will make it easier to see.

A good way to test your well water would be to use one of our digital pH meters. Our digital pH meters read down to a tenth of a point.

Our digital pH meters are delivered pre calibrated to 7.0 and can tell you exactly when you are at a 7.5 pH or higher. Which is a minimum pH for almost all oxidizing filters. And oxidizing filters are the best type for removing iron, manganese, sulfur etc. At an average cost of $50 digital pH meters are well worth the money. And digital meters have a battery life of 2-5 years. And they have the ability to be used in all types of water testing. This includes pools and spa’s.

How to calibrate a digital well water pH meter

Be sure you calibrate your pH meters regularly. Most come with a buffer solution. When you test the buffer solution, the pH should be exactly 7.0. Because 7.0 is neutral pH. Anything below 7.0 is acidic. Anything above 7.0 is alkaline or base. If the pH is not reading exactly 7.0 on the digital meter for the buffer solution. You simple adjust the reading until it is. Almost al digital pH meters have an adjustment screw to change the reading.

As we’ve mentioned before, pH is critical with well water iron filtration. And we encourage the use of digital pH testers at all times. Also we offer Digital TDS meters which we’ll discuss more in a future blog. And we offer many other tests kits as well, please take a look at our water test kits page for more information.
