What is PFAS in water?

PFAS in water are a group of man-made chemicals that have been in use since the 1940s. Two of the most studied PFAS are perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Commonly referred to as Perfluoroalky and polyfluoroalkyl substances. PFAS are (or have been) found in a wide array of consumer products like cookware, food packaging, and stain and water repellants used in fabrics, carpets and outerwear.

Toxic PFAS are linked to serious health problems — including liver malfunction, birth defects and cancer — and they’ve been found in the drinking water of 43 states.

But because these “forever chemicals” have been manufactured by big companies like 3M and DuPont, and used in everything from non-stick pans to food packaging, people say it’s “impossible” to stop them.

Often times PFAS manufacturing and processing facilities, and airports and military installations that use firefighting foams which contain PFAS, are some of the contributors of PFAS chemical releases into the air, soil, and water. And this includes common sources of drinking water.

Because of their widespread use and environmental persistence, most people have been exposed to PFAS chemicals. There is evidence that exposure to certain PFAS may lead to adverse health effects. The sources for this information were the EPA website, and Food and Water Action.

How do I remove PFAS from my drinking water? PFAS Filters

Removing PFAS from your drinking water is normally pretty easy and inexpensive to do.

The first thing to do. Is to determine whether you want to remove the PFAS from the whole house (POE). Or just the drinking water only (POU).

The second thing is to determine how much PFAS is actually in the water? And to test the basic water quality before deciding on a proper PFAS filter system.

The third thing to do is to determine what the source of the PFAS is? For example, are you on a public water supply? Or are you on a private well that you want to remove PFAS from? The reason that this is so important is because most public water supplies have been treated to some degree. And so they are unlikely to have as many contaminants that will interfere with the filter. But public water supplies may be very high in chlorine, chloramines, calcium hardness and other substances. So they may interfere with the filter’s effectiveness.

Private well water is far more likely to have contaminants such as iron, sulfur, sediment etc. that will interfere with the filter’s ability to function, or to last a long time. Before filtering or treating well water for PFAS. There are some basic things you should do to be certain your filters will work well. It just takes a few moments around the house to gather this information to be sure that you are removing Polyfluoroalkyl and Perfluoroalkyl properly.
