Water softeners as iron filters?
One of our biggest recommendations is that homeowners never use water softeners as an iron filters. And be very wary of any salesman who would suggest that you do so. A water softener will sometimes reduce a portion of iron in your water. However, the life of your water softener will be reduced significantly. And it will begin to use a great deal more salt. And this added salt usage will simply increase over time. This creates ongoing salt sales income for water softener salesmen.
Big box companies and some in-home water filtration salesmen will almost ALWAYS recommend a simple water softener to their well water customers. Despite the fact that it will only serve as a softener and will not effectively filter all of the iron. Or take away the smell. Which is likely what brought your attention to our iron filters. Iron will coat the softening resin. And the resin is what does all of the softening work. Thus prohibiting the water softener from doing its intended job. If all you want to do is get rid of iron that is quite simple and inexpensive.
